Time to say goodbye...

Dear readers,

After four years, our TeRRIFICA project has come to an end – and we couldn’t be prouder of the results we have achieved with this project. The team ran co-creative multi-stakeholder approaches in which participants had the opportunity to expand their knowledge around climate change and innovative climate action and to identify opportunities, drivers and barriers of implementation.

TeRRIFICA has shown to be of great public interest. Despite the Covid-19 pandemic, input on local climate change challenges was generated. Most important of all it was to achieve a common understanding of EU and non-EU countries of climate adaptation – and that cooperation and mutual consultation really worked.

A database tool for visualization was successfully developed and implemented! The tool and our data sets are publicly available (check out Dataset 1 and Dataset 2). 69 case studies have been identified and described as flagship examples of climate actions in 6 pilot regions of which 17 have chosen and analysed in detail as relevant sources of good practices of co-creation in climate action.

But most of all, along the project, the TeRRIFICA Pilot Regions have established relationships at various levels which entail future actions related to TeRRIFICA, its methodologies, and objectives. Activities reached out to countries beyond the pilot regions, climate change adaptation plans have been developed, new green areas have been developed, new networks have been established, scientific papers have been published and education and awareness raising campaigns have been implemented, just to mention some.

Finally, we are delighted to know that we will continue the partnership with some of the members in brand new projects starting in a few months time. And we’re equally excited to announce that the TeRRIFICA legacy (especially the crowd mapping tool) will live on in next projects as well.

What remains for now is to thank the colleagues from the consortium and their co-creation teams for the professional and committed work in this project. I would also like to thank the Project Officers at the EU Commission for advice and support, especially in the initial phase of the project and during the difficult period when our Belarusian partner had to leave the project, as well as the Advisory and Valorisation Board for its skilled care.

Last words from our Pilot Regions

Brittany, Normandy and Pays de la Loire (Sciences Citoyennes)

The TeRRIFICA project has been a very successful accelerator in bringing together stakeholders from one French region, Normandy, and strengthening their commitment to work together in participatory research projects to find concrete solutions to prevent or adapt to climate change. The result is a network that will serve as a demonstrator before trying to extend its model to other French regions. This would not have been possible without the help and ideas of the whole TeRRIFICA team, especially those who were able to share their experience of co-creation in educational contexts. Oldenburger Muensterland (University of Vechta)

During our work on the TeRRIFICA project we have established new cooperations and intensified others. People were happy to share local knowledge, good practice examples and experiences from their own activities for climate change mitigation and adaptation and we learned a lot from them. It can not be said often enough that without their contributions this project would not have been possible. Some collaborations are going on right now with new events or projects to come. We are cooperating with some of our stakeholders to organize activities for the European Sustainable Development Week 2023 in September. Service Learning for sustainable development in our region will play an important role in our Science Shop Vechta/Cloppenburg in the next years, and so will the creation of new spaces for learning and exchange on sustainable development. We are looking forward to the first spring season at our "Cloppenburger Klima-Eck" and hope to see more such spaces pop up in the future. (+ info on the Pilot Region)

Belgrade (Center for the Promotion of Science)

The TeRRIFICA project positioned the CPNs as a South-East Europe climate engagement and literacy hub. It was also a great example of citizen science and is now extensively recognized and valued as one of our region's best examples of citizen science projects. Using TeRRIFICA, CPN started acting as a seed for citizen science and will work more in that direction. The intersection of citizen engagement, climate actions, and co-creation is the direction the institution and myself will follow in the future. (+ info on the Pilot Region)

Barcelona Metropolitan Area (Catalan Association of Public Universities)

Participating in the TeRRIFICA project has brought multiple benefits to the Catalan Association of Public Universities (ACUP). The project has helped us to increase our understanding of the climate change challenge as well as to know the policies, experiences, and good practices implemented in the Barcelona pilot region. In addition, it has given us the opportunity to discover methodologies specific to co-creation which, for sure, we will use in the day-to-day work of the association. Likewise, TeRRIFICA has allowed us to forge a series of alliances and collaborations, both at a political and technical level, with institutions that work on the ground. Finally, thanks to TeRRIFICA we have come into contact with coordinators and partners of other EU projects based on the RRI with which numerous synergies have been established. The Poznań Agglomeration (Adam Mickiewicz University)

This year, we will implement the concept of a demonstrative Climate Garden. The garden, with nature-based solutions, including water-retention solutions, meadows will support our campus biodiversity. It is also planned to be a place of educational workshops for students, academics, and residents. A significant achievement was the development of the Climate Change Adaptation Plan for Poznań Metropolis. We also cooperate with the project consortium "We're Acting for Climate!", that is using and promoting the TeRRIFICA crowd-mapping tool within the group of pupils and their families. We have also initiated the living lab “Education for Climate” and have started a series of workshops dedicated to high school students that have chosen a geography as their leading field. In addition, we are still working intensively on scientific articles that collect knowledge gained in the TeRRIFICA project. (+ info on the Pilot Region)

Minsk (Education for Sustainable Development Association)

The crowdmapping tool played an important role in Belarus, since it turned out to be the only opportunity for people to express their opinion regarding climate challenges in the country. This tool is the first step to express a civil position regarding the environmental situation in Belarus. Through TeRRIFICA, we drew attention to the problem of climate change, changed the attitudes among different stakeholders, including university teachers, and introduced teachers and students to the concept of citizen science. ... until next time!

This is just a see you later! TeRRIFICA may end, but the work and tools developed, the new connections established, and the results achieved along the project will last. Thank you for having accompanied us in this adventure. We hope to share new projects with you in the near future.

All the best from the TeRRIFICA partners!
